Rogerian Argument: Education in A Community
Education in America is growing every
year. The people are learning differently, for example in mathematics, we are
finding more ways to solve problems than what one’s parents would have learned.
The problem is that students are also getting into bad learning environments amongst
their community. The students have trouble learning because of their culture,
race, or certain environment they are dealt with to try and get a good
education. In the article “Black Students'
Educational Experiences in Predominantly White Universities: A Review of the
Related Literature” by Ibrahim Mohamad Karkouti stated that “Although diversity
is deeply rooted in the formation of the American society, institutions of
higher learning have not been very responsive to this issue because of their
conservative culture” (Karkouti). The culture effected them so much it was hard
for them to get with their program of education. Along with the environmental
problem of the situation of learning, in the article "Competence,
Commitment and Opportunity: An Exploration of Faculty Views and Perceptions on
Community- Based Education” by Zahar Ladhani which talks about community-based
education, it says “It consists of learning activities that must utilize the
community extensively as a learning environment in which not only students, but
also faculty members are actively involved throughout the educational
experience”(Ladhani). This shows how the environment around them can affect the
learners and how the whole institution can be hurt by how the community or
environment affects the student’s education.
On the other
side one would argue how an education can not be affected by one’s community.
The community does not have the affect one how a teacher would teach and or it does
not affect the commitment of the student. The student is its own person, they
can choose what they want to do with their life, if that is going to school or
not, or if it is trying hard in school or not trying, it is up to them to make
their own decision. One would say that it is also true that race can’t be
affected by the education because of there is predominately African American schools
in intercity areas where there is for the most part not a problem with them learning
differently than other students would that are from a different school or
different race. The students’ parents can also control if they are raised right
and are fit to be in a regular education program like elementary school, middle
school, high school, etc. The community couldn’t be liable for the student to
not have been ready to go to school. I do agree that the student is their own person
and can make their own decisions and it could be kind of a domino effect if one
friend drops out, but it also can be affected if a student’s friend drops out
but their parents are responsible of their child because of how they were
raised and stay on their own track, not what the students friend might have
done. I do not agree with the race argument because of the fact that even in
schools with predominately African American people they tend to have more
trouble in intercity school than a private school would. The graduation rate
for a private school is a lot higher than a intercity public school would have.
The students’ parents can control their child and should in certain cases where
the student falls behind, again this would not necessarily be the schools fault
for the student to be failing a subject or wanting to drop out. Typically, if
the parents aren’t scholarly and or have went to college there is a lower
chance of their child in going to a college or to finish high school even.
Though I do agree and believe in parents wanting to give all they have for their
child and to make sure they do better than what they have accomplished, it is
inspiring when a child is the first to go to college from their family.
My position on
the problem is that education can be affected by the community you live in and
the base of the community’s health can be affected in this as well. The community
that is unhealthy and unstable can lead to poor education throughout the whole city
and the people around one another. This action with being an unhealthy
community can affect the student just through a year of education but long
term, an article talked about an organization called Information, Education and
Communication (IEC). This article was called. "Long-Term Impact of
Community-Based Information, Education and Communication Activities on Food
Hygiene and Food Safety Behaviors in Vietnam: A Longitudinal Study” by Kumiko
Takanashi, in this article they talked about the IEC and how the behavior of a community
can affect persons for a long period of time, it says “Information, Education
and Communication (IEC) interventions have been employed using various methods
to improve behaviors, but little is known about their long-term effectiveness”(Takanashi).
Not only can it affect the students in school education but when they are home,
doing homework if the parents aren’t willing to help because of them not being healthy
or having a problem at home, it can be hard for the student to get the help
they need to succeed.
In conclusion
there is some similarities between the two positions, they are both in for
wanting what is best for the student. The student is the most important part of
both main points. The education of the student is what draws both parties
together to have the argument. Ways they could both come together is see how
much of a difference it is if they are living in a unhealthy community but one
family have parents that are willing to help and have been educated and another
family whose parents haven’t succeeded the way they would have wished too, then
see which one of their student/child succeeds in their classes and homework to
show the students goals in achieving the right education. We need to bring the
parents together and make sure if the community is unhealthy to have the
parents help and support their child in schooling, if the community is healthy
we still need the parents on board in making their child’s education experience
benefit them in a way they will grow and potentially help their own community or
a new community one day.
